farnesylation

The farnesyl group is the linear grouping of three isoprene units. It is specifically attached to proteins that contain the C-terminal motif CAAX by cleavage and addition to the SH group of C; the free carboxylate group is also methylated. Believed to act as a membrane attachment device. See also polyisoprenylation.
